This is one of many examples where having won a Goodreads book I've looked for others in the author's series to read and review. This is the first in The Lairds of the Loch trilogy which I read after having won the second and third installments. They are all stand alone books revolving around the three MacFarlan girls during the time of Jamie Stewart's return from English captivity to resume the rule of Scotland.I am particularly fond of this series for several reasons--the characters are so well drawn and realistic that you are honestly interested in their lives and relationships. Secondly, there is a great deal of actual Scottish history shared in an entertaining way. And third, the description of the scenery of this wild, rocky, highland is breath-taking.
This is the first story--the escape of a young galley prisoner from rebel clan's fleet. Magnus Galbraith washes up on the shore of MacFarlan land and is found by the eldest daughter, Lady Andrena. Having lost all of his sons, Laird MacFarlan convinces Mag to marry Dree and to assume the MacFarlan name. James Stewart is once more on Scottish soil and is in the process of gathering loyal followers together to unify Scotland under a uniform code of law. This is their story and it is page turning.

The Laird Choice Lairds of the Loch Amanda Scott 9781455514359 Books Reviews
This book was hard for me to read. Amanda Scott has always been one of my favorite authors with great attention to detail, but all the different lochs just keep me back tracking and going to the preface map. She lost a chance to enhance the story line by delving into how and why Audrenna and her sisters got their "gifts". I doubt I finish the trilogy.
Amanda Scott never dislpleases me. I have never been disappointed with how well she places you right there where the action is happening! I never miss one of her books
Amanda Scott NEVER fails to deliver not only a wonderfully romantic tale but also a truly great historical one as well - her books are on my Keeper Shelf.
Somewhat disappointing. Definitely not as good or fast paced as most Scott novels. I wouldn't actually recommend the book, and consequently, will not buy the 2 that follow.
Excellent, couldn't put it down
It was a very satisfying ending to this book but I had to read 90% of it before it got interesting. I love Amanda Scott's books, But this was not one of her best efforts. She tried to keep up the romantic tension by not allowing the heroine to see the hero's feelings until the end. But the reader couldn't see those feelings either. So it made for a very slow book. This is not my favorite Amanda Scott.
Quick and easy read. I bought a bunch of these for not having to think too much. Pretty good, but she isn't my favorite writer - but worth the entertainment. These and the others in the series are good because they don't have too serious issues or dangers to deal with - just some antagonist/protagonist stuff. Sometimes you buy romance to soothe your brain, and sometimes to challenge it. This is a soother.
