This book reads in an elegant way, packed with astounding and moving insight. I couldn't wait to read the next section. The vivid depiction of Samuel's character in contrast with Eli and his sons' condition, as well as the powerful life of prayer that the prophet led. It's inspiring reading, really, underscoring the need for purity in heart ..."Speak, Lord, for thy servant listens!"The way Meyer depicts the fall of Israel in desiring a king, to be "like other nations" is also an amazing section. The hopeful choice of Saul, who was sovereignly chosen, yet selected as a king the people, in their sinfulness, deserved is also compelling.
There are too many gems to reveal in a review. I am deeply thankful for Meyer and his devotion to commit his insight to paper, probably over 100 years ago, and for those who have made these works available on Kindle (for .99!). I have a far greater understanding of Scripture after reading each of his devotionals.
I highly recommend this book, as well as all the others this humble servant of God has composed.

Was looking for a bio of Samuel but this author was super Protestant. Unreliable. Hopefully can find an orthodox Catholic perspective.

I never fully considered Samuel's role as God's servant during a long life filled with rapidly changing cultural, political and religious shifts. I loved this! His eye was always on what God was doing, not what the men of his time were doing. We need a Samuel today!
