Excellent book by Nancy Spungen's mother. Nancy was the better half of "Sid and Nancy'" way back in the punk rock era. When I read this book, I see a lot of what Nancy went through, having been there myself. Unfortunately, back in Nancy's day, there was nothing that could treat her for her emotional pain, sadness, and anger. I got the feeling that Deborah, her mother, often blamed herself. I don't think she realized that there was nothing she could do for Nancy. Very sad for everyone involved. By the way, if you have ever seen the movie "Sid and Nancy", the real Nancy was much more beautiful then the actress that played her.
I like true stories versus fiction. Having grown upat the same time as Nancy Spungen knowing of Sid Vicious and The Sex Pistols, I was anxious to read this remarkable firsthand account by Nancy's mother. I had forgotten about the crime actually and was reminded that there was headline news surrounding Sid's death when I ran across this book in the list. Mrs. Spungen tells the story of her family's struggles and joys in such a wonderful accounting that I could not put the book down from beginning to end. I felt truly invested in her story of heartache and life's journey through personal hell and back. I admire her for her candid and soul bearing relating of her daughter's life, struggles, death, and legacy. Excellent read. Thank you.
This was a book I could not put down. It was hard to read how this child grew from infancy, to adulthood, with serious mental problems, that no doctor would treat. Telling the parents, she was going to be ok, and to just take her home, and love her. Her behavior spiraled out of control, to the detriment of her family, who suffered tremendously, because they loved her, and wanted desperately, to help her. She treated her parents and siblings horribly. At times she showed love, but was it real, or just to get her way. She wound up with Sid Vicious, and thats where it all ended. It would seem her parents were enablers, I even at times thought so, but if you put yourself in their shoes I wonder how many would do differently. She was their child, and they would do anything to help her lead a normal life.
I first read this book when it was first published in 1983 or 1984, and re-read it when I got my , and it was as good as I remembered. I think it's easy to blame the medical profession and Nancy's parents for how she turned out, but the truth is that not everyone can be helped, and Nancy remains a diagnostic mystery. She suffered early neurological trauma and displayed signs of psychosis, although I don't think she was schizophrenic per se. Nancy was born in the late fifties when none of the newer antipsychotic or mood stabilizers were available, only old school antipsychotics like Thorazine. I can't help but wonder if, had she been born two decades later, could she have become a functional human being?
I think that Deborah Spungen did a good job of telling Nancy's story, although she gets several points wrong. As a middle class suburbanite, she is clueless about the punk movement and even gets John Lydon's name wrong. She also references one of Nancy's neighbors, Phil Marcade (whom she calls Felipe) as stealing Nancy's records. Phil wrote a book called "Punk Avenue" in which he disputes this (he also has a fair amount to say about Nancy, whom he knew well). She also claims that none of Nancy's friends came forward after her death to offer their support or condolences, although several accounts insist that she refused requests from Nancy's friends to attend her funeral. Nonetheless, this is her account, and I believe it offers the reader a fuller picture of who Nancy was beyond the sensationalistic and often misleading headlines.
Recently read a bunch of rock and roll star autobiographies and each one was the same, boring and did not begin to develop any sort of sympathy or understanding for them - the woe is me, i was a HS drop out, played drums, made millions, blew it all up my nose and now i made a comeback, left me bored.

This book, written by the mother of Nancy of Sid and Nancy fame, really was amazing and left me for a great appreciation for both Nancy and her family who despite it all did their best to fix a terrible situation that started literally the day she was born.

I give Mrs. Spungen a ton of credit - great read.

PS Johnny Rotten's given name is John Lydon - in the book it is something else, and that might be a error; also, despite the fact that Sid Vicious was a no talent clown, the Pistols were and are one of the most important bands to come out of 1970's Punk explosion and Never Mind the Bullocks is a great album (my 2 cents).
Honest..but immensely sad story. I am reading this book for the second time. First read when it came out..in 1996...over two decades ago. After reading just now in 2017 a second time as a more mature adult and having lived with someone with a severe mental illness I can relate first hand with what Deborah and her family went thru. Nancy's family had to endure a lot because of her illness and how she reacted because of it. You seek out and try everything to help them and get so excited when they do better..but then get crushed when they dive back down into their illness over and over. You get exhausted in every way..and then you and the ill person have no more to give. I do wonder what what have been the outcome if they were able to have tried the diet modification treatment. When you are living in chaos and trying to keep it together it's all a blur. My heart goes out to them. I commend her mother for being so honest. Sometimes it was hard to read and made me cringe about the things she said..but severe mental illness is life crushing and soul stealing. But through it all there was love...and you can see Nancy was a beautiful person. I wish her family peace.
